Christopher Smith Associates - Gravelly Industrial Park
Contract Period:
16 weeks
Overview
The former Tetley’s distribution site based on the Gravelly Industrial Park. It was built in the 1970’s and had been used for a wide variety of storage options, but most recently it was used to distribute drinks all over the Midlands. It was closed in early 2022 to be demolished and cleared for a bigger unit as well as to make better use of the space.
Challenges
We have experienced lots of challenges on this project, including clearing 25,000 m² of cement bounded asbestos, circa 1400ton of scrap metal. We had to work alongside the M6 Motorway, the River Tame & River Rea, We also had to manage the dust across a 13 acres site during the summer and get the job done in 16 weeks!
Actions
A detailed method statement was produced outlining the method for demolishing the structures, how we intended to remove the asbestos both cement bounded and licensed materials from the main unit and office block. There were two surface water outfalls going into each one of the rivers that had to be protected and bunged. Dust cannons were brought in to help manage the dust from the demolition and crushing activities during the hot weather, and the site was putting in 12 hour shifts Monday to Friday in order to complete the works in 15 weeks.
Results
The site was completed on time and returned to the client as agreed schedule, with just over 22,000 m³ of reusable crushed concrete 6F2.
