World Environment Day 2025: Top 5 ways that you can help reduce plastic pollution
5th June 2025
What is World Environment Day?
This is a movement to increase awareness of pollution and find effective ways to reduce this collectively. This year focuses on beating plastic pollution. Over 400 million tonnes of plastic is created by people across the world every year. Did you know that less than 10 per cent of this plastic that is produced is recycled?
Here are the top 5 simple ways that you can help the environment:
- Switch to cardboard straws instead of using plastic straws.
- Use re-usable containers, such as glass, to avoid single-use plastic.
- Avoid plastic carrier bags – use a bag for life instead!
- Recycle, recycle, recycle! Make sure to recycle all your plastic in the appropriate bins to avoid it going to landfill.
- Join a community clean up group in your area!
Why should you take part?
Plastic pollution across the world needs to be addressed urgently because it poses immediate threats to both the environment and human health. Tackling pollution isn’t just about cleaning up — it’s about changing systems, reducing waste, and creating sustainable solutions. Every effort, big or small, helps push toward a healthier planet.
Did you know?
Health and Beauty retailer, Boots, have a Recycling Scheme which allows you to bring in your empty beauty and wellness products to recycle them, in exchange for points! This is a great way to reduce plastic pollution and help to protect our planet.
