Our Story

1950-1957

In the 1950's, after returning from the Army, David Short got right out to work, beginning his daily duties of cutting logs and felling trees. In 1957, Shorts Timber Services was born.

Late 50's

Shorts Timber Services took off by clearing areas of Kent for construction of the M2 motorway. After successfully completing this job, they were then asked to do the same for the M4.

1960's

The company moved from Datchet to Ascot where David bought a former sawmill and bog behind Ascot station. We still operate from there today as Station Works.

1960's

After acquiring a base in Ascot, Shorts Timber Services (Datchet) became a limited company.

1960's

Demolition was added to site clearance as part of the business growth.

1970's

Shorts Timber Services continued to grow and David Short purchased former landfill at St Georges Lane Ascot, where we still operate from today. We opened the doors to Skip Hire.

1984

With Shorts Timber Services continually growing and becoming a reputable and successful company, Gary joined Shorts Services and set up Shorts Agricultural Services.

1980's

Inroad into commercial property was formed.

1990's

Introduction of landfill tax encourage recycling activities

1994

Composting began at Planners Farm, Berkshire.

1995

David Short moved up to Chairman and Gary took over the reins of the company as Managing Director.

1998

Shorts Agricultural Services won South East Agricultural contractor of the year award.

2000's

Shorts was going from strength to strength and in the early 2000's, acquired 4 small skip companies and expanded the skip hire services.

2006

Shorts won the 'Company of the Year' award at The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Community and Business Excellence Awards. A proud moment for everyone involved.

2007

St Georges Lane in Ascot became a Material Recovery Facility.

2009

Shorts Agricultural Services gained a Royal Warrant.

2011

As Shorts continued to grow, a Materials Recycling Facility opened at Aldershot.

2014

With the need for more space, the decision was made to create office space for Head Office team at London Court in Bracknell.

2015

Plant Hire expanded and bought out an existing Plant Hire company, opening a new depot in Milford, Surrey.

2020

Achieved National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC) membership

2020

Continuing to go from strength to strength, today Shorts are an industry leading business, offering a diverse range of services in Waste, Demolition, Plant and Tool Hire and Agricultural Services.
