Big Energy Saving Week: Your guide on how to save energy at home
What is Big Energy Saving Week?
Big Energy Saving Week (19th – 25th January) is the perfect time to reflect on how we use energy and explore simple ways to reduce costs and lower our carbon footprint. We understand how using energy efficiently is so important, now more than ever, with costs continuing to rise. This week aims to raise awareness of how people can make better decisions about energy consumption which all adds up to meaningful savings over time. Plus, saving energy isn’t just good for your wallet; it helps the planet out too!
What are simple ways to save energy at home?
1) Turn the heating down
Only heat the rooms you need to use and close certain doors to keep the warmth in. Even lowering your thermostat by 1 or 2 can reduce energy costs significantly.
2) Turn switches off, don’t standby
Devices that remain on standby continue to use power. Switching them off at the switch can add up to meaningful energy savings.
3) Wash smarter
Only wash full loads of clothing and keep the temperature low. Washing at 30°C can help to cut costs and save energy.
4) Avoid using the tumble dryer
Tumble dryers use a lot of electricity. Try drying clothes on a rack in a heated room or place items on the radiator for quick drying.
5) Replace your lightbulbs
LED lightbulbs use far less energy compared to incandescent or halogen bulbs, converting most of their energy into lights. They also have a much longer lifespan, reducing the amount of waste.
6) Cut down your shower time
Cutting down your showering time to under 5 minutes or swapping a bath to a shower once a week is a helpful way to reduce energy consumption.
7) Use your dishwasher when it is full
Waiting to use your dishwasher until it is full helps to save water and cut down costs.
8) Don’t overfill your kettle
Only fill up the kettle to the amount you need. Filling it up to the top takes longer for the kettle to boil and uses more energy.
